RESEARCH FOREST

 

The UBC Alex Fraser Research Forest, Knife Creek Block is a 3,500 ha area south west of Williams Lake, BC dominated by irregular stands of Interior Douglas-fir.

In 2013, Tesera developed a high resolution forest inventory (20m x 20m gridcells, user defined microstands 0.1-3 hectares) using ground plots, LiDAR, colour infrared, and ancillary data and produced initial and post-treatment response growth & yield curves and performed timber/habitat supply modeling.

 

Our HRIS Knife Creek results are tantalizing…I’m really excited that we are getting to the point where a bunch of folks can debate the merits of managing our forests in different ways, and then quickly analyze the results and implications. Great stuff.

In 2012, Tesera developed the analytical approach using Landsat and aerial photo plot sample distribution and infrastructure needed to complete the Landscape Vegetation Inventory (LVI) as originally designed by FLNRO. We subsequently contributed to improvements in the process and the underlying software.

 

We supported the completion of LVI in Wells Gray Park, western portions of the Quesnel TSA (heavily impacted by Mountain Pine Beetle), a portion of the Williams Lake TSA; and in the northwestern corner of the Cassiar TSA, near Atlin BC.

In 2016, Tesera participated  in the forest inventory trial on the Fort a la Corne Test Forest conducted by Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, Forest Service branch and provided a high resolution inventory solution using SPOT and ground plot data.

In 2017, Tesera began developing high resolution inventories for Chinook Community Forest, Fraser Lake Community Forest, and the Stellat’en First Nation woodlot near Burns Lake, BC. In 2018, Tesera began developing a high resolution inventory for Esk’etemc Community Forest and Dunster Community Forest.

In 2014, Tesera provided a biomass analysis (estimates of forest biomass, productivity, and associated carbon storage and loss potential) for a forested area in Costa Rica.

HIGH RESOLUTION FOREST INVENTORY IN BRAZIL

 

September 17, 2018

Visiona Tecnologia Espacial, in São José dos Campos, will join Tesera Systems, a Canadian forestry company, in the development of technology that will use satellite images to monitor trees.

 

The three projects were selected in a call for proposals launched by FAPESP in conjunction with the National Research Council Canada (NRC). The approved projects will be funded by FAPESP and the Canadian International Innovation Program (CIIP).

 

“We will add Tesera’s expertise in forestry inventory to that of Visiona. The intellectual property of the technologies to be developed will be shared, “said Cleber Gonzales de Oliveira, a researcher responsible for the project.
